Motherboard and CPU (processor) are the two essential components of a computer. Failure any of them normally results in a completely dead state of the machine. Other times, motherboard or CPU failure may completely lock up or hang the system requiring a hard reboot.

With a PGA- or LGA-style CPU, ensure that the CPU is oriented correctly in the socket. With an SECC-style CPU, make sure the CPU is completely inserted into its slot.
