what is optical fibre
Fiber Optic Cables
Unlike coax or twisted pair, both of which use copper, fiber optic cables use optical fibers, which carry digital signal in the form of light. An optical fiber consists of a thin cylinder of glass, the core, surrounded by a concentric layer of glass, the cladding. Two types of optical fiber cables are available in the market now.
- Single-mode Fiber uses a single ray (frequency) of light, known as mode, to transmit longer distance.
- Multi-mode Fiber uses multiple rays (frequencies) of light (multimodes) to transmit data over a shorter distance.
Many types of connectors can be use in Optical Fiber cables. Two major types of connectors are the straight-tip (ST) and the subscriber(SC) connector.
